26th annual event presented by rcs construction will help fund new physiotherapy equipment for residents

The ability to stand, walk or move with confidence can make all the difference in someone’s quality of life. Thanks to an outpouring of community generosity, $319,891 was raised Thursday evening to help make those everyday moments possible for more people through new physiotherapy equipment. The funds were raised at Northwood’s 26th annual Live More Awards Gala, presented by rcs construction, which brought together nearly 500 guests at the Halifax Convention Centre in support of better care and greater independence for people living in long-term care.

For many residents, maintaining strength and mobility is essential to their quality of life. The

new equipment will expand the range of therapies available on-site, helping residents recover

from illness or injury, reduce the risk of falls and continue doing the everyday things that matter most, whether that’s walking to the dining room, joining a group activity or visiting with family.

“Physiotherapy plays an important role in helping residents maintain their independence, confidence and quality of life. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we can provide more opportunities for the people we support to stay active and continue doing the things they love,” said Charbel Daniel, president and CEO of Northwood. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this evening possible, especially our presenting sponsor, rcs construction.”

The evening also celebrated Nova Scotians who are making an extraordinary difference in their communities. Five individuals received the Hedley G. Ivany Live More Award: Louie Lawen, Brian Lugar, Jim Todd, Tracey McGillivray and The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab.

Six additional recipients were recognized with Live More Pillar Distinction Awards for their

contributions in specific areas: John van Gurp (Advocacy), Chris Harding (Community), Houston Barnaby (Diversity), Debra Orton (Innovation), Lisa Anthony (Loving Care) and Dr. Raza Abidi (Research).

“At rcs, we believe the strongest projects are built on strong relationships,” said Chris Baldwin, partner, chief operating officer and chief financial officer of rcs construction. “Our work with Northwood has developed into a meaningful partnership, and we’re very proud to support the Live More Awards and celebrate the people who make a difference in our communities.”

The gala was made possible through the generosity of sponsors, donors and community

partners who share a commitment to helping Nova Scotians live more. A complete list of

sponsors is available on the Northwood Foundation website.

Hosted by emcee Liz Rigney, with music by Mike Cowie, the evening featured a playful

performance of “Let’s Get Physio,” a parody of “Let’s Get Physical,” followed by a moving Fund-A-Need appeal highlighting the important role physiotherapy plays in residents’ everyday lives. Layne the Auctionista helped inspire further generosity through a spirited live auction.

The Northwood Foundation is the charitable organization behind this inspiring event. Through

community fundraising and donor support, the Foundation helps enhance care, quality of life
